Privacy Policy

Last updated 18 August 2026

PeerTute is a peer-tutoring app for students at Copperbelt University, built and operated by Funtiva Tech. This policy explains exactly what we collect, why, who else can see it, and how to get rid of it. It describes what the app actually does today, not what it might do later.

What we collect

DataWhy
Name, email address, phone numberTo create your account, sign you in, and let the person you are meeting recognise you.
PasswordStored only as a cryptographic hash (argon2id). We cannot read it, and nobody at Funtiva Tech can tell you what it is.
Profile photoOptional. Helps you recognise each other at a meetup.
University, programme, year of study, courses you teach or studyTo match students with tutors for the right course.
Verification documents — national ID or student ID, a live selfie, result slips or admissions lettersTutors only. Used solely to check that a tutor is a real, enrolled student before other students meet them in person.
Messages and file attachmentsDelivered to the person you are talking to, and stored so the conversation is still there next time.
Session details — who, which course, where you met, agreed price, timer recordsTo run bookings, keep both timers honest, and settle disputes if one arises.
Reviews and ratingsShown publicly on a tutor's profile.
Reports you submit about another userSent to our staff for review, with the related session details attached.
Course searchesTo suggest tutors relevant to what you are studying.
Notification token for your deviceTo send you notifications about your bookings and sessions.
Mobile-money reference for subscriptionsMasked — we store only the last four digits, never the full number, and never a PIN.

What we do not do

Who else can see it

Only the services needed to run the app:

We may also disclose information where the law requires it, or where it is genuinely necessary to protect someone's safety.

What other users can see

Your name, photo, university, courses, rates, ratings and reviews are visible to other PeerTute users. Your email address and phone number are not shown to other users. Your verification documents are never shown to other users — only to our staff reviewing them.

If you report someone, the person you report is not told that you reported them, or what you said.

How long we keep it

Your account data is kept while your account exists. Delete your account and we remove your profile, messages, verification documents and uploaded files. Some records are kept longer where we have to: moderation records of a serious safety incident, and minimal records required for legal or accounting reasons.

Your choices

Security

Traffic between the app and our servers is encrypted with HTTPS. Passwords are hashed, never stored in readable form. Uploaded documents live in a private store and are readable only through an authenticated staff endpoint. The Android app also blocks screenshots and screen recording inside the app, so your chats and session details cannot be trivially captured and forwarded.

No system is perfectly secure. If you believe your account has been accessed by someone else, change your password and contact us.

Children

PeerTute is for university students. It is not intended for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their data. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we will remove it.

Changes

If we change this policy we will update the date at the top. Significant changes will be announced in the app.
